Smartex® IS is an effective leak detection system for use with hot or cold bituminous roofing membranes. Detecting leaks quickly is key to prevent- ing serious damage to roofing insulation and building structures.
Progeo's Smartex® IS is a flexible leak detection system that can be in- stalled in either a permanent "always on" or a regularly scheduled testing mode. When permanently installed, the Smartex® IS system is linked to the system computer. For flexible scheduled testing, a hand-held testing terminal is used.

Smartex® IS utilizes an electro-resistive system specialized for use with hot or cold bituminous roofing. The core of the system is a heat resistant, conductive glass felt which is embedded under or between the bituminous layers in the waterproofing or roofing system. If water penetrates the membrane, it will contact the felt which causes the signal on the roof to conduct onto the felt.
Immediate and positive determination of leakage in the upper layer of the roofing is possible with Smartex® IS . Once the leak is detected, the location of the leak can be determined in one of several ways. In permanently installed systems, notification is sent to the computer terminal and in manually tested systems testing is accomplished with a hand-held reader. The location of a leak can also be determined using Progeo's on-demand Smartex® VM or LP systems.

You can specify the time of the testing, and can even carry out the tests yourself with the use of our specialized hand-held testing terminal. Or you can use the permanently installed leak detection version of Smartex ® IS for constant monitoring.
Installation and Measurement
The core of the system is a heat resistant, conductive glass felt which is embedded between the bituminous layers in the waterproofing system.
If water penetrates the upper layer, it will contact the felt which causes the signal on the roof to conduct into the felt. The waterproofing can be tested on a regular basis within the guidelines of the building quality assurance documents, or during building use by the hand-held computer terminal. It can also be monitored by a permanently installed leak sensor. Immediate and positive determination of leakage in the upper layer of the roofing is possible with this system.
Location of Leaks
Once leakage is detected, the leak can be located by a proven method, such as Smartex ®IS. The leak is easier to locate if the conductive felt under membrane has already been partitioned into smaller testing cells. This system makes it possible to maintain the good condition of the roofing membrane and to conserve elements of the building itself in a simple and cost effective manner.
